5m cranks but will not start

so i had a cracked head, i replaced it with an older 5mge head and obviously did my HG. i replaced out the old distributor with the one from the head i removed(dist. had some sort of vacuum advance.) also replaced the thermostat housing thing, with the one off my old head.

also put in injectors and fuel rail i just had sitting around.

the engine cranks, but isnt starting.... any thoughts??

im gona check to make sure im getting spark later on this weekend...
i set the #1 cylinder to TDC and both cam gears to proper marks. dist. may be a bit off but it should still start.
and before i did the job, i was getting spark....

i really hope there was just some bad gas in the injectors and rain i put on and its gona take some cranking to get it out

any thoughts would be good

My guess would be that the dist. Is 180 out. Pull the dist. Crank the motor over one full rotation till the marks are lined up again and re install the dist. Give it a shot let us kno

lol actually, it turns out my old head, the cam marks were "t" marks, on the head i just put on there has both a t mark AND an "E" mark.

but for some reason the old heads marks were the t marks

i asked at celica supra.com and was told the proper marks were the e marks.

so i had the cams 180 out.
but it still does not tell me why my old cam gears proper marks were the t

and i know they were becaue i set it to tdc before i pulled the head off.

also my timing belt doesnt want to go back on, so i think its done for gona put a new one on this weekend..

ive ran into this issue to. the 82-83 5m using different timming marks than the 84+. the belt and gears are also different, the 82-83 use a rounded tooth design where the latter used a flat tooth design.

why they changed is a mystery, maybe to make it easier to time the engine?

CanadianBak'inSupra 10-22-2010 11:57 PM

yea its kind of an off thing to have timing marks then another set of marks exactly 180 to the really marks.

not to mention i have to use the marks labbled "E" and notthe marks labled "T"

you would think "T" would be timing. maby it has a purpose but to me its nothing, and should not be there...
