85 5 MGE leaks oil
I had our 85 5 MGE engine rebuilt but it still leaks oil. I think it is leaking between the cam shaft housing and the head on the exhaust side of the motor.
Can I remove the cam shaft housing and replace the gasket with out removing the head? Do I need to readjust the valve lifters? What other precautions do I need to be aware of? I know how to keep the timing correct as I have replaced the head before and put all the bolts back in their original places. |
The TSRM for the '86 MKII is available for viewing online. I hope it covers what you need. I know the diagnosis system is different in earlier years though.
Here is the link to the section for working on the head: http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Librar...ection=EM&P=18 I hope this helps. As for timing, resetting the mechanical timing is simple enough and you'll find it covered in that manual in the Engine Mechanical section and Ignition System. I do not know the procedure for setting the ignition timing, although you should set it after you reinstall the timing belt. |
Yes, it can be replaced without removing the head. Exhaust side should be a bit easier. I haven't actually done it, but here is a good link with instructions and suggestions on gaskets...
