Default hatchback latch broken

i'm the new owner of a 1990 supra and am stoked!
i'm redoing the interior and one thing thats stumping me is that i can't open the trunk! the latch by the drivers side door is broken and it won't open with the key... any ideas? it could be really simple i just don't know what to do.
i would appreciate any help i can get. thanks
