mkiii lights
So I'm new here, im picking up a 1986.5 supra 5spd, na, this weekend, Ive seen some cool pics of other mkiii's but was wondering where I can find aftermarket headlights, and tail lights, thanx for any help
|
there are no aftermarket, taillights every made,
but people have made custom led ones, there are som for the headlights, there are right, not that great.. |
thats cool, thanks for the info, i'll prolly just buy the 1991 styled tail lights, and eventually id like to find vented headlights
|
It's surprising they never made aftermarket tails for it. I always liked the tinted tails tho. Loved it on the Cobra, looks pretty good on the mkiii :D
|
Actually, there were some semi-mass produced aftermarket tails made for the MKIII. They were only available in Japan and were all clear. From what I recall they were pretty much the same as the 89+ tails but replace all the red plastic with clear. They looked kind of cool on the white car I saw pics of, but the other color cars I saw pics of I didn't really like much.
|
Did they still have amber signals? I thought by law all cars in Japan had to have amber signals. Thats cool tho, I'd like to see a pic!
|
By law they have to have a certain percentage of red as well... I didn't say that I thought they were street legal. Half the aftermarket lighting accessories available here in the US aren't legal for a car parked on the street much less being driven. ;)
I'll look through the pictures I've collected over the years and see if I have any of those tails. |
Thanks. I'd be curious to see em! I remember a guy from Japan but my 99 Cobra tails because he had a terminator and the 99 was the only new edge style that had amber signals. He gave me $250 shipped no questions for em. I was like WOAH.

Here's one I've always liked quite a bit:
Attachment 2708 It's a Gains tail light cover. I don't know if the tail lights on that car are the clear ones I've seen or if they've done something with the stockers for that look. EDIT: Okay, dug up some info. The clears were made by a company called Takakaira (website is down). They are not very pretty... I forgot thinking that they looked like they were covered in fish scales. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...aDoom/0021.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...om/itomi70.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...oom/clears.jpg And there are some VERY cool LED conversions out there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IB3SA8IVnow |
same type of car as mine. color and everything. interesting to hear the color is rare.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C24YJXTIvBY&feature=fvw nice to see what it would look like with rims and that hatch cover on the back. maybe not nice to hear the color is rare. mine needs a paint job and i want the same color. maybe this will or will not be a problem of availability but price. |
Having tails like that would be sweet. aren't those custom?

A few questions; are the USDM (US Domestic Market) taillights the same as the JDM ? (Japanese Domestic Market)
Another question; in the UK we have a legal requirement for rear fog lights (the two rectangular lights in the body mouldings) does this requirement apply in the US or are they the same as the Japanese Supra. No 1 Modified European Taillights No 2 JDM Taillights No 3 European Taillights http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...f/RearMod1.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b56/cirgriff/GT.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b56/cirgriff/UK.jpg |
Quote:
No, the US Department of Transportation does not have any regulation in place requiring rear fogs. As such they were never placed on USDM MKIIIs... there are USDM vehicles which do have them (primarily those of European origin), but they're not common. Also, I know that German MKIIIs don't have them but I don't know if it is a Eurpean thing altogether, but the USDM MKIIIs have side lights in the rear as well as those in the front (I can't remember if JDM MKIIIs have them either). |
Thanks for that cre, top man; I couldn't work out all the different taillight configurations in the US, It looked as if half of them where JDM imports, but I can understand why now. The UK supra is as in photo 3 even the 1992 model was unchanged. I've just bought a complete JDM taillight set, which I hope to fit as soon as we have a break in the weather.
