Default Anyone compared good 4" to good 5" or 6" spkrs in the front?

I've got an 86.5 supra and I'm thinking about putting 5.25" or 6.5" speakers in the doors. My speakers in front right now are completely blown and I have no idea what some really good 4" speakers would sound like, especially in those original pods.

Obviously, 5 or 6's will sound better than 4's but the reason I'm wondering if it will be worth it is because that sealed pod might help lend some acoustical dynamics to the sound. Furthermore, the hole in the metal opening is only 4" anyway and I'm not sure how well the sound from the extra size in the speakers will travel through that door panel being eclipsed by the metal and the rest of the panel. I'll also be using the installation method where you take out the stock pod completely and install the speakers on a piece of wood as demonstrated here: http://gallery.sanitylapse.com/v/sup...stall+1-21-06/

Has anyone compared both 4"ers and some larger ones where both speakers were of equal quality? I'm thinking about some 4" infinity reference series 4022is, which have pretty good lows for a small speaker. I don't know whether or not I'm going to run a sub either but my main question is about the size difference. Thanks.

That'll be a pain in the ass to install anything bigger then 4" in the front though. I have an 87 and I bought 4" alpine type S that bolted right into the front took me maybe 2 minutes. They sound awesome even with my sub going. The back on the other hand was a pain in the ass either way, they come with 5" speakers but no one makes those anymore. So you either have to go with smaller 4" that bolt right in or cut a bigger hole for your 5 1/4". But personally if you want big speakers, I'd just get 6x9's and a build a box for them in the back. That way you'll get the best sound. Any new 2 way speaker is pretty clear because their running at much higher amperage then the stock ones.

Yeah, I'm thinking about just going with the 4" speakers up front. Something tells me that the 5.25's or 6.5's might sound better but with the way the doors are and all I"m not sure. The 4's are cheaper anyway and right now I'm pretty strapped for cash. I'd still like to hear if anyone has heard both though.

plus!!! if you were to mount on wood you would want to know what each type of wood would sound like. oak/ mahagony will have a warm feeling as apposed to others. i know its just for a mount but thats why sub boxes and stuff are priced cuz its special just be a champ and do the fours i acually had to take my entire door panel off to get em out took about an hour for both doors

I got my hands on a great pair of door panels that came from a 92 supra on the 92s Toyota upgranded to 6 1/2 and made the cut outs alot bigger and the grill is bigger to so I had no problem getting 6 1/2 in my doors
