Default How The Brake System Works

Im new to cars and wonder how brakes work. I have a 89 turbo manual. My questions are When I press on the brakes do all the brake pads stop the rotors or only the front ones, or vice versa the rear rotors are stopped. Also for the e-brake, do they use the same brake pads as the pedal brakes use or do they use a different set of pads and also how does the e-brake work.
