dashboard and light failure/short!? Electrical

ok I just bought a 88 mk3,aside from needing a little paint seems that somethings up with the electrical. I open the door or turn the key the dash just lights up and makes clicking sound and the tail lights start blinking,is that a sort somewhere? I am asuming so and have been trying to investigate but no luck if any help/advice can be given please do. After I open the door or have have the key in it does it for like a minute then it stops. Do I need to redo the entire wiring?PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!
