Does it need a cat?

Hi all, now this may be a stupid question and maybe not, but I own a 1987 Toyota Sup MK3 an NA model 7MGTE i think it is, now do i have to fit a cat as i believe that a cat ony became compulsory after 1995, i may be mistaken but i thought some one out there may know the answer to this one.
