Default timing

you need a camshaft holder, the cheapest i found was in ebay for 19 bucks, make sure you understand and locate the TDC spots.

Now, on adjustable cams, u need to adjust the position of the crankshaft also, few degrees in cams, few degrees in crankshaft.

I am assuming that u want to increase the compression by adjusting the cams? If so, try to adjust the gap on your spark plugs, make them closer
instead of .044 try .04 these will fire it quicker!!

These engines are forgiving but very tempermental.
