Default Cooling system issue or BHG?

First, a good discussion of BHG is in FAQ at:

http://www.toyota-supra.info/forums/...-symptoms.html

Save yourself some time and read the Cygnus BHG article at:

http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/TechTips/bhg_faq.aspx

Suggest you read it.

My pristine 1988 also recently began to have some problems with the cooling system which seemed to begin with trapped air gurgling in the heater core particularly after starting (BTW, my heater VSV has been bypassed to restore heat as explained elsewhere on the forum). I searched the forum and found the gurgling problem could sometimes be fixed by elevating the front of the car and "burping" the cooling system to rid it of excess air. I did this but still had some problems with excess air and erratic cooling. I replaced the thermostat and the radiator cap with factory parts only to find the problem continued. Sometimes when driving I would see the temp guage move up to the red zone then about as quickly would move back to normal. I also noticed the overflow tank was erratic in filling up and empting as the engine cooled. I noticed on the forum that there was a lot of discussion about Blown Head Gaskets (BHG) so I was aware this is a fairly common problem on a 21-year old car with 130 K miles. Finally took it to the dealer and the BHG was confirmed. The dealer said this could be a potential cause and were 90% sure it would fix the problem. Long story short, I wanted to keep the car because of it's condition and went ahead and had the BHG replaced at the dealer ($1600 less a $200 dealer coupon on old car repairs) and new valve seals ($360). Yikes! I pick it up tomorrow and will provide an update if anything else develops.
