yes you can tweek a n/a engine,but not nearly as much as a turbo.n/a mods beyond exhaust ,intake and ignition timing are very expensive.next you would look to individual throttle bodies ,increased cam profiles, upgrading valve springs,porting the head,boring cylinders larger,all of this would cost you so much it would make your head spin.start off with a good condition turbo mk3 .this way you can upgrade more easily plus you will not have the dissapointment with the lack of power the n/a's provide.i once owned an n/a there were just as many problems as the turbo(blown head gaskets),once you drive a good turbo car compared to an n/a version trust me there is no going back.do it right the first time and you won't have to lie to yourself saying this n/a is fast enough for me.hope this helps.
