It's because you can select the gear you need to use to leave a corner, in advance of hitting the corner. The driver (i.e. you) get to pick the gear you're in ahead of time. There's really no good way to do this with an (oem) auto, since it doesn't always shift up or down exactly when you want it to - the computer controlling the valve body picks the gear you're in, depending on the engine rpm, load, and a whole host of other factors.
