sorry to be the harbringer of bad news....but a 7MGE with rod knock is not worth 3K.

to take off the oil pan the engine has to be pulled =X or at least lifted up some.

personally, id drop in a turbo engine, but it all depends on how much money you have, how much you like the car, and what you want done to it.

check the oil often, i check it every time i drive
