It does not have to do with the rear end period, but more so on how the driver engauges the gears and the amount of stress put to the rear differential.

Drag radial tires having extreme grip are the biggest concern. Most people break rear ends this way.

Another would be lateral loads on the differential.

Bad driving behavior is another, someone slamming the gears to hard and trying to "grab gears". In other words its better to shift slow and consistent than to try to make the quickest shift in the world.

But these may controdict the thoughts of most supra owners (drag racing instead of road racing).

But either way with increased horse power your always going to break things easier.

Put it another way, Ryan Woon is running 1300hp on a stock rear end and transmission.

Many others are running consistently with stock rear ends in 500+hp 7m mk3's and Mk4's alike.
