Well, this response is a few years late but I just dropped the tank on my 86.5. Had to undo the holding strap brackets from the frame at the front side of the tank. The adjustment nuts were rust-welded.
I siphoned as much fuel as possible out first.
Once the two bolts on each strap bracket were undone (actually very easy to reach and easy to turn after soaking in PB Blaster for 2 days) the tank dropped nicely. The goose neck filler came loose easily after a bit of back-and-forth movement.
I have since been able to get one of the adjustment nuts working but the other isn't going anywhere.
Waiting now on getting five rust holes repaired on the tank.
