What RPM do you shift at?

when im driven around usually i shift around 4k rpm but i was talkin to my cousin and he said shift it at 4.5 to 5 to get a cleaner shift. i been tryen it out and hes right its hella tight and gets the juices flowin shiften at around 5k rpm but im worried if its bad for the car at all. Opinions?

4000 RPM is a bit high for "just driving around" ,unless you always drive like your ass is on fire

If your going for pure acceleration then yes ,5000 is a "decent" shift point.Your optimal performance shifting is going to be at a point where you have a good amount of torque in your gears.Our inline 6's aren't torque monsters and don't start pouring it on till the higher end.When I realy wanna get moving I try to nail my shifts around 5200 rpm.As for if that's "good for the car" ,it depends on the condition your car is currently in ,and you have to consider that fact that the harder you are on a car the shorter it's life is going to be.I suspect that my car had a bad crankshaft ,and after I beat the hell out of it in a parking lot I now have the engine in a million pieces in the garage.For shifting at the "optimal" range ,you first have to make sure your car is in sufficient shape ,and it's not something I would do often to a car I actualy relied on for transportation.The more relavent question is ,what condition is your motor in?

the only time you should shift the high is if your racing or you are trying to show off all the time, take it easy its an old car! you should be shifting at 2700-3200 for a daily driver, and someone that cares about there engine and the life of the supra. like the other guy said, build up your engine and do more research on it.

hay tattooed dont buy a supra turbo if your not goin to use it. anywho the specs on my car is an 87 supra turbo 101k miles on the damn thing. my engine is in good condition and the only problems i have is a minor oil leak. i usually wind it up to 4-5k rpms because i like to enjoy driven this car....its why i bought it or els i woulda baught an oldsmobile. anywho im tryen to get my shiften down, these things are very sensitive on the ratio.

I always shift at about 3.2k unless "stunting" or passing on the highway. I dont know about supra's in general for shift ease. Mine is tough to get in gears unlike my Celica. Is that normal or am I looking at possible replacing syncromesh in the tranny? The previous owner shortened the shifter to make it shift easier/smoother... I think he may have been speed shifting improperly and damaged the mesh gears.

Only had the car for a very short time, but I did expect smoother shifting.
