91 Supra is on a distinguished road
Default Conversion or no conversion??

First off, I'd like to thank the individuals who helped troubleshoot the problem the auto tranny on my Supra [91 Turbo, 7MGTE, 91,000 miles] was having some time ago. I found out after replacing the transmission fluid and filter that the problem was simply beyond that. I spoke to a highly qualified technician and was told that the slippage my transmission was enduring was fixable through overhaul. As a result, I decided that maybe it was time for a transmission change or manual conversion. As I mentioned in my last post, the transmission that is currently on the car works great, I just hate the idea of having to wait so long to actually "drive" the car because easing through the gears for 5-10 minutes everytime I drive the car is very annoying.
As a newb Im not to sure about the process of doing tranny changes/swaps, nor the advantages or disadvantages to doing this. I would greatly appreciate some advice as to which route to take in order to help accomplish what best suits my supra. I checked out Suprra girl's post on parts needed for the manual conversion conversion and was wondering if getting these parts could simply be stripped from a 5-speed MKIII to mine with little difficulty[Also, which years have interchangeable parts for the 91?]. Would getting the parts from a used yet well maintained supra be somewhat better than newer parts since the used ones have already been worked in from being used? Or is buying everything new a better option? Which manual trans would you guys recommend for this project?? At this point I haven't decided with certainty what I want to do, Im sure the expert opinion of you guys and gals will help veer my plans in the right direction, I thank you all in advance for your time and your thoughts...

sincerely

Javier

Default

R154 is the most heavy duty, but not as simple a swap. The w58 is a very solid trans for anything under 400Hp and a super easy swap if you have a donor car to take everything you need from.

I have done several auto > manual swaps in the past, and each one of them went smoothly and didnt require anything beyond simple hand tools.

I say go for it
